State Focus

Why only these three states? Our major funder, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, has devoted special emphasis to three states—Michigan, Mississippi, and New Mexico—across multiple projects. The foundation has asked us to examine conditions of societal distress in each of these states. Click on the links below to examine state-specific data on the prevalence of societal distress. Over time, we hope to add information about other states, with the goal of ultimately covering all 50 states in the United States, plus the District of Columbia, and providing data on major cities and geographic regions.

Data Note: Data for a specific state are less readily available and involve smaller sample sizes than those examined in national surveys. Therefore, estimates of the number of individuals or households affected, or estimated percentages, are usually less precise than those provided for the United States. When the [[margin of error]] exceeds a specific threshold, we report not only the value itself but also a “[[±]]“ value reflecting the 90% confidence interval (we have 90% confidence that this range includes the true value).
